Packaging Materials

Category description

The basic functions of packaging in food are on the one hand its protection to a predetermined degree for the expected life span and on the other hand, the marking and advertising that aim at attracting the consumer and recognizing its identity.

The protection offered to the food by the packaging depends on the nature of the packaging material and the type of the container. Retail packaging that comes in direct contact with the food, contains information that identifies and advertises the content and protects the food at the retail outlets and in-house storage. In addition to the protection requirement, these packages must be inert to food and not contaminate the food themselves.

Relatively recently, there has been a growing interest in the production of biodegradable packaging materials, in line with the global rules for “green” growth or sustainability. Packaging material producers, use recyclable materials such as  paper, aluminum etc and great leaps have been made in this field.

Packaging, if used properly, can bring economic benefits because it reduces food loss and spoilage, prevents contamination, facilitates transportation and reduces labor costs. At the same time, by protecting the food until it is consumed, it reduces the volume of waste generated by the unfit for consumption.
